Licenses overview
Last updated June 17th, 2025
Knox licenses can be purchased on a monthly, yearly, or biennial basis. You can increase or decrease the number of licenses and extend or shorten each license’s validity period.
-
When purchasing licenses on a yearly basis, you can only increase the number of licenses and extend their validity periods. For more information about purchasing licenses, contact the regional sales team.
-
Licenses are granted and revoked in the order in which devices were enrolled with them.
-
Attempting to register devices in excess of the available assignments count will result in failure.
Getting and managing licenses
Starting with version 25.01, license names and key prefixes have been updated as follows to align with Knox Admin Portal’s new multi-plan license offering:
Previous | 25.01 onwards | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
License name | Key prefix | License name | Key prefix | Can be upgraded? |
Knox Manage | KLM12 | Knox Suite Essentials Plan | KLM12 | Yes — upgradable to Knox Suite Enterprise Plan (KLM12). |
- | - | Knox Suite Enterprise Plan | KLM12 | Highest license tier — upgradable from Knox Suite Essentials Plan by SKU change. |
Knox Suite | KLM11 | Knox Suite Enterprise Plan | KLM11 | No — license type is only relevant to existing issued customers. However, you can replace it in Knox Admin Portal with a Knox Suite Enterprise Plan (KLM12) license. |
Knox Platform for Enterprise | KLM09 | Knox Platform for Enterprise | KLM09 | N/A — this license is used with existing Legacy Knox Manage license keys to enable additional Knox features. It cannot be used separately, and cannot be used for upgrades. |
Legacy Knox Manage | KLM09 | Knox Manage | KLM09 | No — this license type is going to be discontinued in future. However, starting from 25.07, customers can replace it in Knox Manage with a Knox Suite Essentials Plan (KLM12), which is upgradable. |
All licenses are auto-assigned, generated, and managed from Knox Admin Portal. Existing KLM09 licenses can still be managed in Knox Manage, but this is a temporary workaround as customers transition to KLM12 licenses.
View license usage information
To view how many devices can be registered, you must aggregate all devices with the same license type. Each license has a different expiry period, so the total number of devices you can register may differ based on the expiry period. Newly-purchased licenses and renewed licenses are also aggregated with the existing number of devices.
To view the number of valid licenses for each device on the Knox Manage Dashboard, you can add the Device List by License report to the dashboard. For more information, see View report details.
License FAQs
You can get a trial Knox Suite Essentials Plan or Knox Suite Enterprise Plan license.
Knox Suite licenses are auto-assigned first, followed by legacy Knox Manage licenses. If there are multiple Knox Suite licenses, the license with the closest expiration date gets consumed first, regardless of license type or Knox Suite plan (except for old Knox Manage SKU licenses, which are superseded by Knox Suite licenses).
If there are more licenses than devices after the increase, licenses are allocated to all devices in the order they were enrolled.
Licenses are allocated to devices in the order that the devices were enrolled. Extra devices without licenses become unavailable with the existing policy still applied.
iOS and Windows devices are enrolled immediately. Android devices can be enrolled according to the schedule set on the system or by sending a device command.
When a license being used on various devices expires, all the devices simultaneously become unable to use Knox Manage.
After increasing the number of licenses, you should first unenroll the existing registered devices, and then enroll the new devices. The renewed licenses will then be allocated to the new devices.
The license is automatically revoked if the factory reset is completed successfully. If the factory reset fails, the license won’t be revoked and the device becomes unenrolled.
Windows and ChromeOS devices are enrolled with the same license used for Knox Manage (Knox Suite Essentials Plan or Knox Suite Enterprise Plan).
