Manage licenses
Last updated April 9th, 2025
To use Knox Guard, a license is required. Knox Guard offers both free trial licenses and paid commercial licenses to suit your needs. You can generate, view, and manage your licenses on the Licenses page.
License types
There are three types of Knox Guard licenses:
License type | How to obtain | Activation period | Device usage period | Number of seats | Payment plan |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Trial | Generate on the Licenses page | 3 months | 3 years | 30 | Free |
Commercial | Contact a sales team | 1 year | 3 years | Determined during purchase | Pre-paid |
Post-paid | Contact a sales team | 1 year | 3 years | Unlimited | Pay at a later date based on usage |
- Trial license — You can generate a trial license on the Licenses page. The trial license has a three month activation period and a three year device usage period. The trial license only has 30 seats, meaning you can only activate 30 devices with it.
- Commercial license — You can purchase a commercial license from the sales team in your country. A commercial license has a one year activation period and a three year device usage period. The number of seats is predetermined during the purchasing process. Your license reseller can add additional seats if required.
- Post-paid license — You can purchase a post-paid license from the sales team in your country. Similar to a commercial license, a post-paid license has a one year activation period and a three year device usage period. However, the number of seats in a post-paid license is unlimited. Payment occurs at a later date and you are charged based on the number of seats used.
License periods
As mentioned above, each license has two important periods — activation period and device usage period.
Activation period
Devices can be activated any time between the license’s Activation start date and Activation end date. When the Activation end date is reached, the license expires and can’t be used to activate any additional devices. However, devices that are already activated remain active for the license’s Device usage period.
If you purchase additional seats for the license, the activation period is extended for one year starting from the date of the purchase.
Device usage period
Once a device is activated using a Knox Guard license, it remains active for the duration specified as the license’s Device usage period. For commercial and post-paid licenses, this period is three years.
License assignment can be staggered — each device enjoys the full duration of the device usage period, starting from the day it was activated, regardless of if the license expires during that time. Once the device usage period has ended, Knox Guard policies applied to the device are removed and the device can’t managed unless the license is renewed.
Get a license
There are two ways you can obtain a license — you can either generate a trial license, or purchase a commercial license.
Generate a trial license
Knox Guard offers a free trial license that can be used to try out the service. Trial licenses are only valid for three months and can only be applied to 30 devices.
You can generate a Knox Guard trial license through the console:
-
On the Licenses page, select the GET A LICENSE button from the top, right-hand side, of the screen. The Get a license pop-up opens.
-
Select GENERATE TRIAL LICENSE to create a license for the purposes of development and testing.
-
(Optional) If you’re ready to purchase a commerical license, select FIND RESELLER to search for a Knox reseller that supports your intended Knox solutions in your geographic region.
Purchase a commercial license
When you’re ready to purchase a commercial license, we recommend you contact the Samsung Knox sales team. Alternatively, you can directly purchase a license from a reseller in your country.
Enter a license key
Once you’ve purchased a license key, you can add the license to the Knox Guard console.
If you’re adding a commercial license key, ensure you delete your trial license key if you want to assign this license to devices accepted in the future. Otherwise, any remaining trial license seats will be used before any commercial license seats are occupied.
-
On the Licenses page, select the ENTER LICENSE KEY button from the top, right-hand side of the screen. The Enter license key dialog opens.
-
Enter a License name that you can use to easily identify the license key.
-
Enter the License key provided by your reseller.
-
Click ADD.
How licenses are assigned
Devices are automatically assigned a Knox Guard license when they are accepted. If devices are accepted in bulk, license assignment is random; licenses may not be assigned to devices in the order they are listed in the CSV file upload.
When assigning licenses:
- In order for a license to eligible for assignment, the license must be active and have remaining seats available.
- Once a device is activated using a license, the license seat is consumed. This action is irrevocable and the license seat can’t be transferred to a different device.
- After the number of purchased license seats are consumed or once the license expires, the next available license is used.
If there are multiple licenses under the same tenant, licenses are consumed in the following order:
- If there is an active trial key, Knox Guard will assign devices to the trial key first.
- If there is no trial key, or if the trial key has no more remaining seats, devices are assigned the active commercial or post-paid license first added to the console.
- If you’re adding a commercial or post-paid license key, ensure you delete the trial key before adding devices.
- Commercial and post-paid licenses shouldn’t be used together in the same console. As post-paid licenses have unlimited seats, if a commercial license is added to a console with an existing active post-paid license, the commercial license will never be used.
View license details
You can check license details and manage your licenses on the Licenses page.
To review license information:
-
On the Knox Guard navigation pane, select Licenses. The Licenses page opens and lists all available licenses.
-
You can use the Search bar to locate a specific license using its name.
-
Click on the ellipsis ( ) on the far right of the table and select the columns you wish to view. You can select a maximum of eight columns.
-
Select a LICENSE NAME to open the LICENSE DETAILS panel.

- Registered: The license has been added to your account, but isn't active yet.

Delete a trial license
You can delete trial licenses from the Knox Guard console when they’re no longer needed for testing.
To avoid license assignment issues between trial and commercial licenses, ensure you delete any trial licenses from the console before adding a commercial or post-paid license key.
To delete a trial license:
-
On the Licenses page, select the LICENSE NAME of the trial license you wish to delete. The LICENSE DETAILS panel opens.
-
On the bottom, left-hand side of the LICENSE DETAILS panel, click DELETE.
-
On the Delete license dialog, click DELETE to permanently remove the selected trial license. As this is an irreversible action, ensure the selected license is no longer needed.
Out of licenses
When accepting devices, you may run out of available licenses. If this occurs, an Out of licenses pop-up displays.
To resolve this issue, you can:
- Add a new license — Either generate a new trial license, or enter a license key provided by your reseller.
- Increase the seat count of an existing license — To increase the number of license seats to accommodate all your devices, contact your license reseller.
